5 Stars Feeling Very Secure
Found generator to function perfectly. At 82 years of age,I reached a point where I could no longer depend on starting generator by pull string.
I was also able to keep it out doors by building a house over it to keep
it dry and it starts right up with the electric starter.
It makes me feel very secure knowing that the next blackout will not effect the normal functions of my home.
4 Stars It’s a Generator what are you expecting?
I’ve looked long and hard to find a generator that will fit into budject and project size. A stroke of luck landed me this. I was so happy that I saw the price go down I could barely believe it. and was on pins and needles the day that it arrived. The waiting for the freight to arrive was an experience. A semi truck rolls down the street stops at my house pulls out a portable fork truck rolls it to my garage and pulls out again. something to see in a quiet neighborhood. the Assembly was easy enough, my only complaint is that the bracket that holds the rubber feet did not have a hole to bolt into and I had to (per instructions) loosen a vibration mount that attaches to the generator motor to install the rubber hoot bracket. that and the bolts that came with it I changed out with stainless for the rubber feet to attach to the bracket. They were all wrong for it. easy enough fix. so after all my boo hoo’ing……..wait one more that I forgot…ever thought on the instruction it says that there is a oil dipstick on the engine……don’t believe them and just dump the whole bottle of oil that’s included into the motor! after the oil, gas and the minor hook-ups it started with no problems and ran like a dream! I had a pull generator before and that’s the last time for that!
I would recommend this for women that don’t want to be left in the dark and without means. It has all of the features that are easy to work and you not need any special knowledge of mechanics to get the job done. the only thing that might hold them back is the weight….it is darn close to 200 pounds. every bit of it! but once you have the wheels and front bracket with rubber pads on you’ve only got maintenance to worry about once and a while and then when you have to fire it up.
Edit of review – One year Later September 13, 2008
The machine still looks like brand new. Runs like it did out of the crate. I’ve done the required maintenance to it and keep it in my garage most of the time. But when I needed it, it came through like a champ.
We had a 3 day power outage and that generator run for about 22 hours at a time and alot of gas. But it kept the power going to about 1/2 of the house. Great generator!!!!
3 Stars Noisy Generator
I found the assembly and starting of this model very straightforward. Have only tried to run small appliances thus far but power output seems adequate.
This is a noisy product – It is so noisy I thought something was wrong with the machine! I would estimate the noise output in excess of 100 Decibels. If you live in a built up residential area I doubt you will be able to run this model without receiving noise complaints. Contacted Briggs and Stratton who referd us to Generac who told us their is nothing can be done for the noise. They even state that changing the Muffler will void the warranty. I now find I am going to have to build an enclosure to reduce the noise. This is going to take a lot of time and probably cost me a couple of hundred dollars.
The selling feature that really sold this product was the electric start – which I didn’t even use as it started so easily.
I am sorry I didn’t go with a smaller power output Honda, which allegedly run around 55 Decibels.
5 Stars I’ve Got The Power!
It’s actually almost a year and a half since I purchased the Briggs & Stratton 6200-Watt Generator at Amazon. And just as I figured, after making the purchase, we’ve not lost power for any great length of time that really required powering this baby up…that is until this past weekend. And, man, am I glad I had the generator.
First of all, I have well-water where I live. No power = no water because the pump won’t work without power (duh). We had guests this weekend, and with no power for 24 hours, the toilets would have gotten…okay, you get the idea.
Plus it was the weekend, and without the generator the beer would have gotten warm (nooooo!). We have the generator set up to run not only our main refrigerator, but also a mini.
Also on the generator are heat/hot water (oil burner), kitchen lights, living room lights and the wall sockets in the kitchen and living room that include a TV/DVD player. The central air conditioning in my house would be a bit too much for the B & S 6200, so thank goodness it wasn’t one of those 95 degree weekends. The 6200 gives you just enough power for the essentials (and a TV!).
The 6200 has an electric starter that’s super convenient, but in between uses you might consider completely disconnecting the battery, or charging it every now and then by running the machine. I did not follow my own advice and had to use the pull start this past weekend, which was simple and effortless…the 6200 started on the first pull.
I highly recommend this little 6200-Watt machine. All in all…..it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it!
5 Stars Great Machine
A VERY nice machine. It was easy to assemble, and after filling the oil reservoir, it started on the very first pull! It runs very quietly for an engine of this size.
Unfortunately for me, I found the same machine for $100 less the day after I ordered it — Oh well……..

5 Stars One great machine
We have had our generator for close to a year now and it has never failed to do what it is needed to do. I have to say that we are happy campers indeed. It is extremely important that we have equipment that can handle heavy and persistent work loads at times. We have to rely on this generator completely in our wilderness off the grid location when there is inadequate solar gain to power our home and pump our water. We use ours every single day at times. This unit works so well that THREE of our neighbors have bought the exact some model for use at their own places after seeing ours in action. I have heard absolutely no complaints… only raves from all of them. I’m not sure why some others here have had issues… but none of us have.
5 Stars Darkness no more!
Amazon had an incredible price on this when I bought it, and I couldn’t be happier.
About a week after I placed my order, the delivery company wheeled it straight in to my garage (for free!) and setting it up took about 10 minutes by myself.
After doing some research, I learned that using synthetic 5W-30 oil was best in weather that’s below 40F (which describes Michigan for about half of the year). I dropped a quart in, added some gas, and the generator fired right up.
I did notice what sounded like misfiring, as another reviewer noted. However, as soon as I added an electric load, it went away immediately. After talking to some other generator owners, I found out that this is normal, and leaving a generator running with no load is typically not recommended.
Overall, I couldn’t be happier with this purchase. I dare the elements to stand up to me now!
1 Star Dead Generator – Dead Customer Service
I purchased my generator from Home Depot on 13 April. I had a licensed electrician install a manual transfer switch. On 8 June, we had our first power outage. The generator started up immediately and ran for 10 minutes and then shut down. On restart, it ran for 5 minutes and shut down. After about an hour of this we decided to just weather the 96 degree heat with no electricity.
The next morning, I called Briggs & Stratton and followed their voice prompts which gave me the name of a local “Briggs & Stratton authorized warranty repair facility”. I loaded this monstrous machine into my SUV and drove it over to the designated facility. About an hour later, I received a call that the “authorized Briggs & Stratton warranty repair facility” could not do the work because the Briggs & Stratton generator had a Generac motor on it. Another trip to pick up the generator and then called Briggs & Stratton back. After 1 1/2 hours of listening to how important my call was and that my called would be answered by the next available customer service rep, I called Home Depot from my cellphone who was willing to issue a refund even though the generator was more than 30 days old.
I give this Briggs & Stratton 8000 watt generator a 1 only because 0 was not an option. I would give Home Depot a 10.

4 Stars Simple reliable generator
After substantial experinece in helping people in the aftermath of hurricanes, I saw that hurricane Ike was about one week out from my house inland and decided I would not be one of those poor saps without a generator when the power went out. I went to every store around 50 miles of my house before I finally found a generator. It happened to be briggs and stratton elite series with 8000 running watts. It was the only one left and I knew it, so I bought it reluctantly from a tractor supply store in Texas. Well, after a week of having my power out from hurrican Ike I was thrilled with it. Heck, I was even able to watch dvd’s on my TV, and that was while I had the comfort of knowing my refrigerator/freezer was running along with fans to keep the heat down. It is dirt simple to use, it is rugged, and the only minor complaint I would make is it about as loud as a riding lawn mower. That really isn’t terrible though considering that it is a pretty powerful generator as “portable” units go. Thanks Briggs and Stratton, you never let me down.
4 Stars Great Generator, Problems with Starting It
A great generator for the jobsite and home use. My order arrived on time and generator set up was fast and easy. But after putting the generator together, I could not get it started. After checking all the trouble shooting suggestions on the Briggs and Stratton website, I called customer service…they finally suggested I take it to one of their authorized dealers (15 miles away). The problem: the delivery company tilted the generator/container on it’s side during delivery, oil from the engine dripped into the air filter stopping air flow. No air flow, no start. A simple fix once identified. Cost: a new air filter and time away from the job. Briggs and Stratton: Great website, customer service and product.

1 Star Do Not buy a Briggs and Stratton product
I bought this generator one month ago yesterday. It NEVER RAN!!!!!!! I called this company for several days, so they told me to bring it to a service center. I did, well it turns out that the connecting rod was broke. The company refused to fix it because they said it was ran without oil. You can’t run it without oil ,it has an oil sensor switch. So I bought this and now must hire a lawyer. SO MUCH for american manufacturing. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!
3 Stars First Generator
I purchased this generator too use with our travel trailer to recharge the batteries and run the airconditioner. It works well and starts very easy. Only negative is that it has a higher noise level than some of the more costly units.
5 Stars EXCELLENT FOR THE PRICE
THE GENERATOR WAS SO EASY TO ASSEMBLE,AND STARTED WITH ONLY TWO PULLS,
I JUST LET IT RUN BRIEFLY ITS NOT TO NOISEY SOUNDS LIKE A LAWNMOWER.
EXCELLENT FOR THE PRICE THAT I PAID, I LOVE IT.
4 Stars Exceeded my expectations
This is a fairly high quality unit. It’s pretty compact so it won’t be a pain to store and it fired right up after assembly, filling with oil and pouring some gas in it. Tried it with a 6A load and it never changed RPM.
The engine is an OHV of a very popular Japanese design that should be reliable and durable. The aluminum block casting clearly has the Briggs icon cast into it which means it’s a Briggs engine rather than some just some random east-asian knockoff. Lastly, I was surprised to see the words “Assembled in USA” on the generator. Hang in there Briggs & Stratton!
5 Stars An excellent emergency generator
This is a basic no frill generator. Just what I needed to run my sump pump and fridge/freezer. Assembly took about 20 min. Put on the wheels, handle and front foot. Added gas and oil, and it started in one pull. This unit puts out 29 amps at 120 volts. More than enough to power what I need in an emergency. It is a little loud, but at $460 who can complain? I switched to synthetic oil after break in to help starting in cold weather as recomended in the manual. This is a very nice, well made, simple to use generator.
